Death Stranding passes the 10 million player mark. The future of the license looks very interesting.

For a project that has divided critics and gamers alike, death stranding has been a huge success all over the world. The game is celebrating its third anniversary and Kojima Productions has just revealed that over 10 million players have already played to the studio’s first game. This significant figure takes into account all the platforms on which death stranding is available, including the PC Game Pass.

death stranding passes the 10 million player mark

“It makes me happy to think that there are over 10 million ‘Sam One’ players all over the world, all connected to each other,” said its creator, Hideo Kojima, on Twitter.

It may seem obvious that a game from the creator of Metal Gear Solid is a commercial success, but it must be recognized that it has not always taken the path. In some aspects, death stranding was a big flop when it came out. According to a post on ResetEra in 2020, Sony said they were very unhappy with the sales of the game, with the author of the post claiming that no less than 3 million copies of death stranding was still in storage in March of that year. But the critical reassessment of the game has started, greatly helped, of course, by the pandemic, then by the arrival on PC. In death stranding many gamers found themselves facing an experience that helped them find some meaning in a world that had changed dramatically, and by July 2021, the game had sold 5 million copies.

The future of the license looks very interesting

As for the future of death stranding, actor Norman Reedus recently said in an interview that Kojima Productions was working on a sequel. In recent weeks, the studio has also started teasing a game that will feature actors Elle Fanning and Shioli Kutsuna.
